From Courtship to Marriage

In the initial stages of a relationship, the love and passion towards each other are bound to be at their highest levels. At this point, the couple will be able to understand each other and assess their level of compatibility. Eventually, they might move in together and get to know the respective families and friends of each other.

Couples begin establishing their own world and creating intimacy and routines, while learning to establish boundaries between their own world and the rest of the world in the process.

Internal Issues in This Phase

  • Deciding when and how to move in together.

  • Living together and honoring personal boundaries.

  • Dealing with disagreements concerning the routines/habits of the pair.

External Challenges in This Phase

  • Dealing with relationships involving friends and relatives, where the other side is not accepted in full.

  • Problems associated with the involvement of children and ex-partners in blended families.

  • Social pressure or disapproval by peers and relatives.

The Building Phase

Having a solid relationship and enough familiarity, the couple is ready to establish a shared space and make long-term decisions that will affect their lives, such as:

  • Where to live.

  • Whether to have kids and how to raise them.

  • Engaging in joint projects and financial undertakings.

Internal Conflicts in This Phase

  • The focus and nature of the shared project of the couple.

  • Levels of commitment or differing expectations regarding the relationship.
