How to Change a Lock Cylinder

Introduction

Changing a lock cylinder is a simple task that doesn't require a locksmith. With just a screwdriver and a few minutes, you can replace the cylinder yourself.

For most locks, the process is straightforward. However, for armored doors, you may need to remove the handle first. In some cases, where the cylinder is built into the lock, you might need to replace the entire lock instead of just the cylinder.

✔ The old cylinder's dimensions

Implementation Steps

1. Removing the Lock Cylinder

🔹 Check if the cylinder is replaceable

Inspect the door edge at the lock's level.
Look for a screw beneath the latch that secures the cylinder.
If present, the cylinder can be changed.

🔹 Remove the existing cylinder

Loosen the mounting screws to detach the trim.
Insert the key into the lock or cylinder.
On the side of the door, loosen and remove the cylinder screw (this screw holds the cylinder in place).
While pushing the lock, turn the key slightly (30-45°) to align the cam and release the cylinder.
Pull out the cylinder.

2. Installing the New Cylinder

Insert the new cylinder into the lock.
Ensure the latch and cylinder align.
Insert the key into the lock to guide the cylinder into place.
Once properly positioned, secure it by tightening the screws.
